The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the U.N. Started in 1945, it focuses on education, culture, as well as the arts and sciences. Their belief is that peace can be achieved with education and exchanging of ideas and artistic expression. Besides literacy programs and education in general, they provide technical training and assistance in advanced sciences. They seek to promote and preserve cultures around the world.
Somewhat and somehow related to their mission, when the United Nations declared 1998 the International Year of the Ocean, UNESCO took the lead on coordinaating and promoting it. I guess related to their educational aspects, they worked on educating the public on how important is the ocean and its resources, they tried to get people around the world to learn to protect the oceans.
Note
Again, this sheet or souvenir sheet is too large for my preferences. Plus, I don’t like the design: it’s more suited to children. But maybe that’s the target of UNESCO for teaching about the oceans. Nevertheless, I have one of these – plus the identical ones for the New York and Vienna.
That’s the thing about stamp collectors: our tendency is to collect all of the stamps. We know to limit ourselves to specific countries and to specific categories (e.g., only stamps, not postcards). But within a country and category, it’s hard for us to not include stamps we don’t like – especially if we’re using pre-printed album pages like I do, except for my Italian colonies and pre-unification stamps. I wonder if Jewish Italian stamp collectors refuse to have the stamps that depict Hitler (see my Axis Powers page). It’s a bit of a quandary for some of us.
