Love Mail
The Love stamp at the top was designed by Robert Indiana. It’s based on a popular picture designed by him in the 1960s. It was first made as a simple postcard he sent friends. A year later, the Museum of Modern Art in New York asked him to design a Christmas card for them to sell at their giftshop. He used the same design. It was the most popular card they ever sold.
It became an iconic modern art image. Over the next few years Indiana made a few scultures of it that were displayed around the world. In 1975, the U.S. Postal Service commissioned Indiana to make the stamp you see here. They printed and sold over four-hundred twenty-five million of them for the next couple of years.
Note
These stamps of the U.S. Postal Service are boring to me. I imagine the people who work at the Post Office appreciate them. I’m grateful for the work they do, so it’s good there are some stamps that honor them. Incidentally, the back of each stamp has text describing the work depicted on the stamp. Maybe I’ll flip the stamps over and scan the page again to show both sides.
