Endangered Species
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was formed in 1973. It’s a treaty for make sure that international trade doesn’t threaten the survival of species of wild animals and plants. The primary major threat of endangered plants and animals is destruction of their habitats. The second major threat is unrestricted exploitation.
The set of four stamps showing images of annimals and birds are meant to make the public aware of the various species that are protected by the treaties of CITES. This is the second set of such stamps in a series issued over multiple years at all three U.N. post offices.
Note
The first set of stamps are colorful and intersting. They’re well done. The second set of stamps are related to the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. They’re poorly designed and not very colorful. I realize they’re about unplesant events, but this gloomy design doesn’t make people want to use the stamps, for recipients to look closely at the stamps and wonder.
Nothing is learned or promoted by these stamps. The U.N. has issued many stamps with such minimal and unattractive design style. If it weren’t for their many good and interesting programs, as well as many stamps that are were designed, I probably would be deterred from collecting them.
