Postage Due

Italy in Transition, Page SEG 3 (GR-1)

These postage-due stamps are from the new design of 1934, at the bottom half of the Postage Due album page. For only a few of those at their center is the crest of the King and the House of Savoy, with the crest flanked by fasces, the symbol of Mussolini’s National Fascist Party. On the others is just the King’s coat-of-arms – with no fasces.

For this printing, they used only the design with the crest and fasces, but not the design with the coat-of-arms without any fasces. And they overprinted them with the initials, G.N.R. for Guardia Nazionale Repubblican (i.e., National Republican Guard).

What’s also interesting is that at the same time when the German controled government in the north was printing and distributing postage due stamps without the coat-of-arms, the Kingdom in the south was printing the same stamps, but using only the new design with the coat-of-arms – and not the one with the crest and fasces (see Postage Due).

Note

Until recently, this page was empty for a long time, which irked me. It was the last empty page in this album, the Italy in Transition album. There are no more empty pages in my Kingdom, Transition or Republic albums. There are a few empty pages in the Pre-Unification, Colonies, and Occupations albums, but not many.

Anyway, I’m pleased that this page went from no stamps to all of them in a single aquisition. As I said, this previously empty page has been bothering me for a while.

Contains 13 spots: own 13 – 13 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
