Ethiopia
The Italian colony of Ethiopia was established as the result of a war with Ethiopian forces in 1936. It was quickly made part of the Italian East Africa colony by Mussolini, which included the Italian colonies of Eritrea and Somaliland. Unlike some of the other regions in east Africa, the Ethiopians resisted colonial rule and fought Italian forces for years.
These stamps all depict the King, Vittorio Emanuele III. The head of Ethiopia at the time it was conquered used the title of Emperor – which seems like a misnomer to me. So when Ethiopia became an Italian colony, Vittorio Emanuele III was declared emperor. That seemed a little presumptious. I can’t imagine he used that title back in Italy and with other world leaders. Instead, he was just sometimes referred to as King of Italy, Emperor of Ethiopia, King of the Albanians, etc.
Note
It doesn’t seem like much, but only these seven stamps were issued for use in the Italian colony of Ethiopia since it wasn’t long before it became part of the Italian East Africa colony. From that point, stamps for that colony, Africa Orientale Italiana would be used instead. Those stamps are in my East Africa Colony album.
