Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahātmā – from Sanskrit, meaning great-souled, or venerable. He was a lawyer and political leader in India in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He was born in India, but went to law school in London, England. He was moderately unsuccessful as a lawyer – first in India and later in South Africa where there were many Indian businesses and citizens.
Disturbed by poverty and oppression he saw in South Africa and India, he became active in protesting British rule. It took about twenty-five years, but eventually India was granted independence. In fact, India was a founding member of the United Nations in 1945, although it was not a sovereign nation until 1947.
Note
There’s only one stamp missing from this album page, the one depicting Gandhi – which is particularly irritating since I’ve chose to write about it or him for this page. It’s also bothersome since I’m missing only three items for this album. What’s worse is that I can’t find vendor who has it for sale.
Contains 11 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
