Henrik Starcke Statue
The two stamps in the middle of this album page show a wooden statue of a girl with a bird overhead that’s on display at the U.N. headquarters, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber in New York. It’s made of teak and is about one-hundred twenty-six inches tall. It was carved and painted by the Danish artist, Henrik Starcke and donated to the U.N. in 1953 by the Danish government.
The statue is called, Mankind and Hope. It’s meant in part to symbolize colonies achieving independence. The artist wrote, “As the natural growth of the trunk of the tree, used in the sculpture, gives promise of a still greater life, so do I hope to inspire in those present the realization of the great human dream. The bird above the figure, with its wings spread, suggests unlimited flight upward to greater heights. The arms of the figure itself are spread out in the same spirit as the wings of the bird, and I hope this might convey the appeal for the compassion for the weak, the unfortunate, and the oppressed.”
Note
This is such a pretty wood carving. When I first saw it on these stamps, long ago, I thought it was some sort of totem or wood carving from a native American tribe, possibly from the northwestern part of North America. It has a freshness and a timelessness about it.
