Dag Hammarskjöld

U.N. New York, Page 51.0 (BL-1)

The second Secretary-General of the U.N. was Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld (1905 – 1961) was a Swedish economist and diplomat. He was Secretary-General from April 1953 until September 1961.

Being moderately young when he was appointed, 47 years old, and the U.N. still fairly new, he had a significan influence on the shaping of the United Nations: its administration and missions. He improved the running of the U.N. by administrative, non-political staff. He also sought to make the U.S. more involved in global issues, as per their mandate.

Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash in 1961, while flying to negotiate a cease fire in the Congo. He was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Note

The stamps on the album pages in this section of my collection of United Nations stamps were issued while Dag Hammarskjöld was the Secretary General. There may be a couple of stamps that were issued after his death because that’s how the stamps on the album pages are layed out by Leuchtturm. I don’t want to create my own printed album pages for that overlapping period. As they are now is close enough for me.
