Banks of Juba River

Italian Colonies, Page SM-18 (GR-2)

The top four stamps show a Somanlian woman walking along the bank of the Juba River. However, these stamps and the rest on this page commemorate the International Colonial Art Show that was held in Naples from October 1, 1934 to January 31, 1935. It was an art exhibition of art work showing the Italian colonization of Africa, which included Venetian paintings from the 15th Century. It’s purpose was to promote the idea that Italy having colonies in Africa has been around a long time and only natural.

The exhibition was held in Naples because the African Society of Italy (Società Africana d’Italia) was based in Naples and they sponsored it. Plus, the local government sought to promote Naples as the primary port for trade with the Italian colonies in Africa.

Note

The one stamp I’m missing for this page is a special stamp that was meant to be used for official business, only. It wasn’t for sale, per se, to the general public. As a result, they didn’t print many of them – only 1500 of it, compared to the 100,000 of the other 25-cent stamp in this series. Of those, there probably aren’t many that have survived the ninety years since it was issued. How many people collect Italian stamps in Italy and the world? Maybe not as many also collect stamps from the colonies. Still, there must be more than 1500 collectors who want this stamp. So the price is high, over a thousand euros.
