Vienna
Vienna (Wien in German) is the capital and largest city of Austria, with about two million inhabitants, and it sits on the Danube. The Romans founded a military camp called Vindobona there in the 1st century, and from the 16th century the Habsburgs ruled from Vienna as emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. The city withstood Ottoman attacks in 1529 and 1683 and later became a major center of music, home to composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. Its historic center became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
The Belvedere (Italian for “beautiful view”) is a Baroque palace complex in Vienna, built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, a general who won a series of wars against the Ottoman Empire. The architect was Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The Lower Belvedere was built from 1712 to 1716 and the Upper Belvedere from 1717 to 1723.
Prince Eugene died on April 21, 1736, without a legally binding will, and his niece Vittoria sold the Belvedere to Empress Maria Theresa in 1752. In 1776, Maria Theresa had the Imperial Picture Gallery moved there, and the palace later became the residence of the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand. Today it is a museum, and the Upper Belvedere is known for Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss.
Note
I’m not missing any stamps on this album page. The bottom four stamps may look like they’re missing and that there’s only the printed images of them on the page, but I do have them. It’s just that they’re black and gray.
Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
