Giorgio Morandi
Giorgio Morandi was born in Bologna on July 20, 1890. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna from 1907 to 1913. He taught himself etching largely by studying Rembrandt’s prints. He had a brief Futurist phase in 1914 and practiced metaphysical painting from about 1918 to 1922. To earn a living, he taught drawing at an elementary school in Bologna from 1914 to 1929. After that he was a professor of etching at the Accademia from 1930 to 1956.
He focused almost entirely on still lifes and landscapes (e.g., bottles, vases and flowers), and he produced about 1,350 oil paintings and 133 etchings. He exhibited from 1928 onward, and he won first prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1948 and the grand prize at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1957. He was sympathetic to the Fascist party in the 1920s, though his friendships with anti-Fascists led to a brief arrest in 1943. He died in Bologna on June 18, 1964, of lung cancer. Today he is seen as a forerunner of minimalism, and the largest public collection of his work is the Museo Morandi in Bologna, which includes a reconstruction of his studio.
Note
The large stamp in the middle of this album page, the one with the drawing of some wine bottles is meant to commemorate Giorgio Morandi. It seems to be typical of his work.
