FIFA World Cup 1990
From June 8 to July 8, 1990, Italy hosted the 14th FIFA World Cup. Italy had hosted once before, in 1934. Twenty-four national teams played 52 matches in 12 cities, from Milan and Turin in the north down to Palermo and Cagliari on the islands. Italy built two new stadiums for the tournament, in Bari and Turin, and renovated the other ten. The biggest of those projects was the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where the final was played. The mascot was a stick figure called Ciao – a greeting in Italian – with a football for a head and a body in the colors of the Italian flag.
Italy won all three of its group games and was expected to go all the way. However, it lost its semi-final to Argentina on penalties in Naples, then beat England in Bari to finish third. Italy’s star was Salvatore Schillaci, a little-known striker who scored six goals, more than anyone else in the tournament. Cameroon, led by 38-year-old Roger Milla, became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals. In the final, West Germany beat Argentina 1–0 on a late penalty by Andreas Brehme. Most people remember the football itself as fairly dull. The tournament averaged 2.21 goals per game, a record low that still stands, and set a record at the time with 16 red cards. Two of those went to Argentina in the final.
Note
To me, these souvenir sheets are pointless. They certainly didn’t need six of them. If they wanted a stamp for each country that competed in the FIFA World Cup, they could have issued them separately or on one regular sheet. But they don’t ask me when making these decisions. To consolidate them, I put them on the same web page, at least.
