Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. He wrote several short stories and novels, the most famous of which are The House of the Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter. This last one I had to read in school. I didn’t like it at the time; I skipped several chapters and did poorly on the test we were given and the essay I had to write about it. I remember almost nothing about it. It’s one of those books from school days that I’ve been meaning to reread. I might appreciate it now.
As a boy, I knew of Hawthorne for other reasons. I lived in Peabody, Massachusetts. The town was named for George Peabody, a philanthropist who was born there – it was part of Salem at that time. Hawthorne married his sister, Sophia Peabody. In 2010, I went with my sister to Hawthorne and his wife’s temporary home in Concord, Massachusetts (see this photo). It’s very near where the Battle of Lexington and Corcord were fought during the American Reveolution.
Note
As a writer, I chose to write about Nathaniel Hawthorne for this page. Since this album is related to the bicentenial of the American Revolution, I should have written about the Treaty of Paris. It has to do with the end of the revolution. It was the treaty that England signed acknowledging the independence of the new Republic. As a former student of religion, I probably should have written about the Martin Luther stamp. Maybe I’ll add more on both of them later.
