Human Rights

U.N. Vienna, Page UNV 2004.2 (BL-3)

The World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna in 1994 stated that human rights education, training and public information were essential for the promotion and achievement of stable and harmonious relations among communities and for fostering mutual understanding, tolerance and peace. It further stated that member states should strive to eradicate illiteracy and direct education towards the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It called on all members and institutions to include human rights, humanitarian law, democracy and rule of law as subjects in the curricula of all learning institutions.

As a result, they proclaimed a 10-year period, from January 1995 to December 2004, the Decade for Human Rights Education. The two stamps at the bottom of this album page commemorate the completion of that decade.

Note

One of the other stamps worth noting on this page is the one in the center showing a drawing of the Japanese peace bell. You can read about it on the Peace Bell page in the U.N. Geneva album.
