State Overprints
In the late 1920s, several post offices were robbed. Stamps were taken and sold at a discount, assumedly to people at locations far from where they were stolen.
As a result and as a security measure, an idea was tried of overprinting stamps with the abbreviated name of the state from where they were to be sold and used. To start, they tried this in two states, overprinting eleven definitive stamps. All of the stamps on this page are overprinted either with Kans for Kansas, or Nebr for Nebraska. Since it wasn’t an effective deterence, it was discontinued after one year.
Note
Each time I’m in the U.S. – I go several times a year – I put together a few orders of stamps from dealers there. I buy them on-line and have them shipped to wherever I’m staying: either at a friend’s house in New York, or at my mother’s house in New Orleans. Each time I’ve bought one or two of the stamps on this page. It’s very satisfying to have completed this page after such a long time.
Contains 22 spots: own 22 – 22 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
