Corfu & Paxos
Italy occupied Corfu in 1923 for a short period of time. The stamps on the previous album page were from that stint and were used only on the island of Corfu, which is off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea.
From October 1940 until April 1941, Italy fought a war against Greece (i.e., the Italo-Greek War). Italy won and as a result occupied the islands of Corfu and Paxos. Paxos is located near Corfu. These islands were occupied by Italy until 1943 when the Germans took Greece away from Italy when the King surrendered to the Allied Powers and switched sides against Germany.
Note
Maybe the Italian government was too busy with the war, but rather than use Italian stamps as they did on Corfu in 1923, they made use of Greek stamps from the 1930s and overprinted them with just the word Corfu – with no mention of Italy. I’m not sure what was the point and why they didn’t issue or overprint stamps on the main land of Greece.
These two pages are a new edition. They’re part of my recent and current expansion to create album pages for all of the remaining Italian stamp series I’m missing. The exception to this plan is the pages for the more recent years of the Italian Republic. Those I’ll buy from Leuchtturm since they make them. I’ll buy them later. I keep thinking I’m almost finished with creating all of the missing pages, then I stumble on another occupied territory. King Vittorio Emanuele III and Mussolini’s appetite for cobbling together an empire was insatiable.
