Spoonbill & Honeycreeper
Roseate Spoonbill is a light coral colored wading bird; it’s part of the Ibis family. It’s a beautiful bird found in South America and the southern coast of the U.S., particularly in Florida. I’ve seen them in the bayous of Louisiana. They stand about three feet high with a wing-span of about four feet. When they’re mating, their features sometimes change to a bright magenta.
Scarlet Honeycreeper, or I’iwi based on the sound they make (i.e., ee-EE-wee). They mostly have scarlet feathers, except for the black feathers on its wings. They have a curved pointy bill, and a longer thin tongue that are used for extracting nectar from flowers. Found primarily in Hawaii, they mate when the Metrosideros polymorpha tree is in bloom as they feed on its nectar and use it to feed their young.
Note
There are so many stamps from which to choose, but I decided to focus on two stamps showing images of birds. I chose one bird I know fairly well, and another I’ve never seen but hope I will one day – if I ever get myself to Hawaii.
