Maternity & Infancy

Occupations, Page FO11 (GR-3)

On these stamps, besides the overprint in black ink saying Occupata Fiumano Kupa – which means basically, Occupied Fiume Region – there’s another overprint in another color. It’s in violet or blue. It reads, Maternità e Infanzia, which means, Motherhood and Childhood. Basically, these stamps cost a little extra to pay for postage and for raising money for single mothers and orphans – or something like that. The Fascists were known for social programs, helping single mothers, children, and the elderly, as well as the unemployed, injured veterans and others. It was part of their appeal with the public: “sure we’re cruel and hateful to some people, but look how nice we are to widows and orphans”.

Note

These stamps are not easy to find. In general, stamps from the Italian colonies and occupations aren’t too popular. Then these are actually Hungarian stamps overprinted for the Fiume region – not the city of Fiume. This all makes it more removed from mainstream Italian collectors. When I do find any, it’s just singles and they’re expensive. The hunt for these stamps is going to be extensive.
