Flags: Denmark & Lebanon

U.N. New York, Page 88.3 (BL-1)

For designing a flag, the North American Vexillological Association recommends a booklet by Ted Kaye called, Good Flag, Bad Flag. Based on it’s criteria, Denmark and Lebanon flags are good. The following analysis uses Ted Kaye booklet for that assessment:

Keep It Simple
The Libyan flag was the simplest: a green field with nothing on it. The only thing that could make it simpler is if the flag were white, but that’s reserved for surrendering. Denmark and Norway are simple and similar, being from the same region, and they both are square. The Lebanon flag is simple, except that the tree would be difficult for children to draw correctly – but they could probably do it close enough to be recognizable and look good. The deviations might be interesting.
Use Meaningful Symbolism
The Lebanon flag has a cedar tree. The cedar trees in Lebanon are mentioned over a hundred times in the bible. They were used by the pharoah of Egypt and others in the region. It’s something for which they’re known and an image that brings Lebanon to mind. It’s equivalent to Canada’s maple leaf – but not as simple of a drawing.
Use a Few Basic Colors
Libya wins in this category with only one color. The Ivory Coast flag is simple, but it’s the similar to Ireland, Italy and others. Theh Qatar flag uses only two colors, but it’s almost identical to the Bahrain flag and not distinctive enough in color choices.
No Lettering or Seals
The flags of Belize, East Germany, and Spain violate the rule about no seals. The Zaire flag includes kind of a logo, but not a simple one. So it was somewhat of a seal.
Be Distinctive or Be Related
The Denmark flag isn’t particular distinct; it’s similar to the other Scandanavia and Nordic country flags. But it has a unique feel to it given the colors. It’s related to the region, but different enough to be distinguished in battle from the other neighboring flags. Assuming it would fight on the same side as its neighbors, troops would know to retreat to this flag of one with a similar cross – and away from flags such as that of Russia, China, or an Arab League flag.

Note

As I mentioned elsewhere, there are several album pages containing flags. Although maps can be neat, this flag series is boring – which was issued only from New York and not from Geneva or Vienna. I’ve tried to make it interesting by doing a critique of some of the flags, pointing out which are well done and which aren’t very good.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
