Air Mail

U.N. New York, Page 64.1 (BL-1)

Almost all of these stamps are air mail stamps. To me, that’s a little odd for the U.N. to specify and charge for air mail service. There are no airplanes or airports on U.N. grounds, at the U.N. headquarters. I guess you’re paying to get in on U.S. air mail service: they transport a sack of airmail posted envelopes to one of the airports in New York and give it to a U.S. postal distribution facility there for them to put on a plane to go wherever? Still, unless you’re mailing to somewhere in the U.S., all letters regardless of postage paid will go by air.

Note

Although I think the air mail designation for U.N. mail is pointless and usually redundant, I do like the look of these stamps. I particularly like the first two on the second row. They’re cheery, and the colors are not primary or standard colors. They have subtle and soft colors, while still being bright.
