Fiumano Kupa
Prior to World War II, Italy had occupied Fiume, the port city (see Fiume), but not the inland parts of the Fiume region. Instead, Yugoslavia controlled that territory since 1924. It was known at Fiumano Kupa – but I can’t find anything to verify that name.
During the war, the Axis powers, which included Germany and Italy, conquered Yugoslavia in 1941. Italy seized the opportunity and took Fiumano Kupa. It was occupied by Italy for a few years. When Italy surrendered to Allied Forces in September 1943, though, Germany then took control of Fiume and Fiumano Kupa, ending Italy’s occupation of the region.
The top set of stamps are part of an imperial issue of definitives that the Fascists ordered from the Italian post office. They were meant to remind the public that the peninsula of Italy was at one time the home base of an empire and therefore it’s acceptable and natural for them to take foreign lands to build a new empire. They also reminded the public of who was the king.
The last two stamps at the bottom of this page were issued for express mail service in Fiumano Kupa.
Note
This is a new sub-album. I’ve only recently created the album pages for it. I didn’t have any of the few stamps, but found a few from dealers around Italy. So far I have none for this page: I hate having a blank page, especially the first page of an album or a sub-album.
I’ve seen a few of the remaining stamps for sale on-line, but they were absurdly expensive – thousands of euros each. Hopefully, I’ll find some lesser quality ones for affordable prices.
Contains 14 spots: own 0 – 0 unused, 0 used.
