Toscanini
Arturo Toscanini was an Italian symphony orchestra conductor, born in 1867 in Parma, he lived until 1957. He was the music director at the Teatro alla Scalla in Milan, and director of the New York Philharmonic. He was most known in the U.S. for being the music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra, the radio orchestra of the National Broadcasting Company. Besides performing living around the country and on the radio, many recordings were made of his performances and sold in the U.S. and the world.
As a boy, my step-father had a recording of Beethoven’s symphhonies performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra, with Toscanini conducting. I remember looking at his photo on the album cover, and listening to the recordings many times – dozens of times. I know Beethoven’s fifth symphony so well. Hearing it brings back good feelings for me. I also remember well his ninth symphony. In fact, for my first marriage, I had the organist play the Ode to Joy part of the ninth.
Note
The drawing of Toscanini isn’t very good on the stamp of him. The Hemingway one is better, but I don’t like his writing style very much. I find his minimalist, understated style of writing not very pleasant or good. I know that’s more modern. Nor do I want to write like Faulkner in a heavy, pedantic. I find prefer something in between: detailed, but light.
