Trade & Development
The two stamps in the middle of the third row of this album page are commemorating the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development, an agency of the U.N.. Formed in 1964, the U.N. Trade and Development agency works with non-governmental organizations to promote and develop trade amongst countries, particularly in developing countries. It’s purview includes all aspects of development: aid, finances, trade, transport, and technology. It was formed because the main financial institutions related to the U.N. – the Internanntional Monetary Fund and the World Bank – were not suited to assist under developed countries.
Incidentally, in the early years, the U.N. Trade & Development was closely involved with the New International Economic Order (see New Economic Order) until it fell out of favor.
Note
The colorfulness of several of these stamps is delightful. The U.N. is starting to show promise at making pleasant and well designed stamps. I think that’s an important part of promoting the U.N. and the messages contained in these stamps.
Contains 14 spots: own 14 – 14 unused, 0 used.
