Castelrosso
The island Castelrosso, now known as Kastellorizo was the eastern most island of Greece, about a mile off of the coast of Turkey, almost as far south as Crete. During World War I, the French helped the Greeks to protect the island from the Turks.
Italy was given the island as a result of the Treaty of Sèvres. That treaty was between the Allied nations of World War I and the Ottoman Empire (i.e., Turkey). The Italian navy took possession from the French on March 1, 1921. It became part of the Isole Italiane dell’Egeo (i.e., The Italian Islands in the Aegean Sea). It remained part of Italy in one form or another until after World War II, when it was given back to Greece under the Treaty of Paris in 1947.
Incidentally, there’s a humorous Italian movie that was set and filmed on this island: Mediterraneo. It won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film 1992.
The stamps on this album page were definitive stamps from the Kindom of Italy, but overprinted with the island name. They were used in the begining. Besides this page, there are four more pages of stamps used on Castelrosso (see links in left margin).
Note
This sub-album is complete. I have unused copies of all of the stamps on these pages. It’s not many and they weren’t expensive or difficult to find. Most dealers in Italy have them at low prices. So this was the first sub-album in my Italian Colonies album that I finished.
Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
