Gazelles

Italian Colonies, Page EC-17 (GR-2)

The stamps showing gazelles are actually not about the animals. Instead, they’re commemorating the International Colonial Art Show that was held in Naples from October 1, 1934 to January 31, 1935. It was an art exhibition of art work showing the Italian colonization of Africa, which included Venetian paintings from the 15th Century. It’s purpose was to promote the idea that Italy having colonies in Africa has been around a long time and only natural.

The exhibition was held in Naples because the African Society of Italy (Società Africana d’Italia) was based in Naples and they sponsored it. Plus, the local government sought to promote Naples as the primary port for trade with the Italian colonies in Africa.

St. Anthony of Padua

St. Anthony of Padua, also known as St. Anthony of Lisbon since that’s where he was born, was a Franciscan priest. In 1226, he became the Provincial Superior of Northern Italy, apppointed by Pope Gregory IX. He decided to reside in Padua, which is somewhat the center of Northern Italy, if you consider the weight of Venice compared to that of Milan and Torino combined.

He was a well liked saint amongst Italians, in his day and still today. He was liked by St. Francis of Assisi, founder of his order. St. Anthony was known for being a bible scholar and writing inspiring sermons, some of which have been published. St. Francis had him teach new members of their order. He occasionally visited Rome and preach to the papal court. He died at age 35 in the year 1231. He was so admired that the pope listed him as a saint a year afterwards in 1232, the same year they started building a huge basillica in his honor in Padua.

The set of stamps on this album page labeled Sant’Antonio di Padova depict the life of St. Anthony. They’re in commemoration of the 700th anniversary of his death. They depict scenes from his life, such as when he entered the Franciscan Order.

Note

I don’t particularly like these large stamps, the ones on the last two rows. I prefer smaller stamp, the original standard size for definitives. I think a stamp should be small to fix easily on an envelop or postcard. I hate when I write on a postcard and then buy a stamp for it at the post office, but the stamp is so large it covers the end of the openning lines of my message.
