Royal Visit & Death
In November 3 1934, King Vittorio Emanuele III went to Somalia on a flight from Rome to Mogadishu, to the airport that was built only a few years before, in 1928.
Two days later the king went to Villabruzzi, also in Somalia, about 90 kilometers away: the city is now called, Jowhar. It was founded in 1920 by the Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, the king’s cousin. Prince Amedeo died and was buried in Villabruzzi the year before the royal visit. That’s the reason for the overprint on the set of stamps at the bottom: Onoranze al Duca Degli Abruzzi (i.e., Honoring the Duke of Abruzzi).
After paying his respects to his cousin’s grave and touring the city he started, the king returned to Mogadishu on November 11 to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday. These stamps were issued, after the king returned to the Italian peninsula, to commemorate his visit.
Note
When I first designed this page, I assumed all of them were the same size. I didn’t realize the last one in this set, the one with a face value of ₤ 25 was larger, much larger than the others. I like very much the size and design of the others, but this large one is a nice addition to the set. I wonder if they image of the horse looks like the King’s horse.
Contains 14 spots: own 14 – 14 unused, 0 used.
