Indigenous Art
For this series of stamps of indigenous art, the three U.N. post office location issued sheets of six unique stamps each, for a total of eighteen stamps. They celebrate indigenous cultures, cultural heritage, and the rights of indigenous peoples. This set issued in 2004 is focused on cultural preservation, showcasing artifacts from different eras and regions of Europe, emphasizing rights to traditions, intellectual property, and spiritual sites.
The first stamp on the sheet of six is of a modern sculture from Switzlerland. I can’t find any other information on it. The second stamp shows a Romanian stone carving of a sitting woman from the Neolithic period (5000-4600 b.c.e.) from the Hamangia Culture. It was found in Cernavodă, Constanța, in Romania. As best I can tell, the last stamp on the top row shows French carved wooden tops to butter molds.
The first stamp on the second row is detail of the British Royal Standard (1801-16), made of hand-sewn, wool bunting. The design is appliquéd with the details painted. The next stamp shows the an illustration from the Nuremberg Chronicle – the image is of Koln (Cologne) in Germany. Written and illustrated in 1493, the book was an encyclopedia of history, including some biblical paraphrasing. The last stamp shows a goddess figurine from Drenovac, Serbia. She is meant to be the Mother Goddess – the creator of humanity.
For more of these stamps depicting indigenous art from Europe, see the New York (UNG-2004.1) and the Vienna (UNV-2004.1) albums. There are also stamps in this album of indigenous art from South America and North Africa.
Note
The indigenous art stamps are interesting, but I like the stamps of endangered species better – especially when they show pictures of birds. For the four here, there aren’t any bird stamps. But they’re so well done that I can’t complain. I particularly like the one of the Black Bear. It’s such a nice stamp.
