Ralph Bunche
Ralph Bunche was a key person in the formation of the United Nations. He was an administrator in the early years and he was active in several peacekeeping operations. He is known especially as a champion of the decolonization of many territories around the world, facilitating the transition from a world of kingdoms and empires with colonies to one of self-determination. This in turn led to many more member states in the U.N.
For his efforts in mediating early conflicts between the Arab nations and the newly formed state of Israel, Bunche was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. He’s the first African, black person to receive a Nobel prize.
Note
Because these stamps are from the Vienna post office, there are some special issue stamps celebrating Austria – I’m referring to the ones on the second row of this album page. I’m not sure why they issued these. They don’t have special stamps just for Switzerland or the U.S. Yes, the New York post office has stamps like the flag series that the other locations don’t offer, but those don’t depict scenes in the U.S. Perhaps there was some resistance in Austria for accepting U.N. Vienna mail. To make them feel good about the arrangement, maybe they issued stamps saying how wonderful is Austria.
