Imperialism

Italian Colonies, Page LY-15 (GR-2)

Caesar Augustus lived from 63 b.c.e. to the year 14 of the common era. During his reign and afterwards, their was supposedly two centuries of peace in the world: Pax Romana. That doesn’t include the frontiers where his troops were conquering and annexing new lands, or the internal fighting and coup suppresions that went on – or any abuses of the people, including the gladiator games and related specatacles.

The Fascists Party of Italy liked Augustus in particular because he built established the Roman empire, made it great. He began by conquering and annexing Dalmatia and around what was then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, as well as Egypt and expanding possessions in Africa. These are all the areas that the Fascists with the approval of King Vittorio Emanuele III pursued to build the Italian empire at this time: Croatia, Ethiopia, Somalia, etc.

The top set of stamps celebrate how Rome ruled the lands and the sea and there was peace and prosperity for all as a result. It basically uses these times as justification and as a model for acquiring colonies for Italy and for participating eventually in a world domination war with Germany.

Note

This page is finished in that I have all of the stamps for which I allocated space. And I’ve described the primary set of stamps. But I haven’t said anything about the thirteen Tripoli trade fair. I’ll add that later.

Contains 12 spots: own 12 – 12 unused, 0 used.
