Vincenzo Bellini
Vincenzo Bellini was a opera composer. He was born on November 3, 1801 in Catania, in the Kingdom of Sicily. That’s my birthday. Maybe he should be my patron saint.
His style of music generally included long, flowing melodic lines. This led to him being known the Swan of Catania. His work was admired by some of the top opera composers like Giuseppe Verdi. As for me, I don’t recall ever seeing one of his operas or hearing one of his musical compositions. I need to see one of his operas if I’m to adopt him as my patron saint.
All of the stamps on this album page are in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of his death. You’ll notice each says, 1° Centenario Belliniano, which means First Hundredth Bellini Anniversary. Four of these stamps show an image of Bellini, one of him playing a grand piano, and another of his birthplace or home in Catania.
The set of airmail stamps at the bottom half of the page also are in commemoration of Bellini, but show angels playing harps or violins – presumably playing Bellini’s music in Heaven. Angels are said to have wings and fly: so they’re suitable for air mail stamps. There’s one stamp with a pastoral scene of some country homes. I’m not sure what that’s about: maybe indicating his style of music.
Note
Recently, I managed to locate and buy all of these stamps. I had the main set for quite a while, but kept putting off buying the air mail set. The only reason I bought them recently is because I had a credit with one of the local dealers and needed to get something to clear my account. Still, it’s good to mark this page as finished.
Contains 11 spots: own 11 – 11 unused, 0 used.
