Garibaldi
If it wasn’t for Giuseppe Garibaldi, there would be no Italy – at least not the country as we now know it. Before him, it was just a peninsula and a large region composed of several countries, much like Scandanavia. There were similarities between the languages, but they were separate and distinct languages, not dialects of Italian as people in Italy like to say. A dialect is basically a deviation from a mother language. Instead, some time after the unification of Italy by Garibaldi in the 1860s, the Tuscan language was selected as the official language of Italy. It was afterall the language in which wrote many great literary writers (e.g., Dante, Plutarch, Manzoni).
Regarding Garibaldi, I’ve already written about him on the Garibaldi & 50 Years page. Those stamps, from 1910, were commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the forming of Italy and Garibaldi’s role in that event. The stamps on this album page, from 1932, are commemorating only Garibaldi on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. There are several scenes including his birthplace, his wife, as well as Garibaldi with the King Vittorio Emanuele II, and Garibaldi with Nino Bixio, a military comrade and fellow leader of the Red Shirts – Garibaldi’s revolutionaries.
Note
Here’s another satisfyingly completed album page, containing all of the stamps in unused condition. Recently, I found the stamps I needed to complete the previous pages. The results are that I’ve finished about three dozen pages in a row. That’s the effect I’ve been looking to accomplish.
Contains 17 spots: own 17 – 17 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
