Disabled

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-81.1 (BL-2)

In 1981, the U.N. declared it the International Year of Disabled Persons. They called for an action plan for providing equal opportunities for the disabled people in relation to others. It also called for a plan to prevent disabilities and to rehabilitate the disabled. The stamps on the top row were to commemomrate this event and declaration.

Note

The U.N. was already under criticism for issuing too many stamps each year, with the intention of making money from collectors – far more than was needed by users of stamps from the U.N. post offices. The Palestinian related stamp at the beginning of the second row of this page, though, was criticized by many people, by the press – and by stamp collectors. It was one of the least sold stamps at the U.N. From that point, the sale of U.N. stamps dropped by more than two-thirds by the end of the decade. It’s no longer the default, second collection of most U.S. philatelists. You can read more about it on the Palestinian People page in the New York album.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.
