Works of Michelangelo

Italian Republic, Page 87 (GR-4)

Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni) was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Tuscany. At about 13 he was apprenticed to the Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, and he later attended the Platonic Academy founded by the Medici. He worked as a sculptor, painter, architect and poet, and his best known sculptures include the Pietà (1498 to 1499), David (1504) and Moses (1516). The tomb of Pope Julius II, which Moses belongs to, was a project he worked on for about 40 years without ever finishing it to his satisfaction. In 1546 he took over as the architect of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and he died there on February 18, 1564, at the age of 88. His contemporaries called him Il Divino (the divine one).

The Sistine Chapel

Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in 1508, where the cardinals still elect a new pope. The original plan was to paint twelve apostles, but Michelangelo negotiated for freedom to choose the subjects, and by 1512 he had finished a ceiling with more than 300 figures. It shows nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, surrounded by prophets, other figures who foretold the coming of Christ, and the ancestors of Christ. Between about 1535 and 1541 he painted The Last Judgment on the altar wall for Pope Paul III, showing Christ’s second coming and the damned being dragged to hell. However, the nudity drew criticism, and after his death Daniele da Volterra painted over parts of the figures, which earned him the nickname Il Braghettone. A restoration ran from 1984 to 1994.

Note

These stamps show images from the Sistine Chapel paintings, along with a self portrait of him. They are the other stamps I remember on envelops I remember my mother receiving from our family in Sicily. I thought these were so cool. It was long ago, but I think I remember mostly the 20 and 50 lira stamps. I’m not sure how much it cost to mail letters overseas at that time. They would have one of the castle stamps and one or two of these Michelangelo stamps.
