Duchy of Parma

Italian States, Page ASI-10 (GR-1)

Napoleon gave his wife, Marie-Louise – a Habsburg – the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. She ruled there until her death in 1847. Then it was given to the Bourbon-Parma family, who ruled the Duchy of Lucca and previously Parma and Piacenza. The Bourbons ruled until 1859, when they were overthrown in the Second War of Independence in Italy.

In December 1859, the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza was combined with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena to form the United Provinces of Central Italy. In March 1860 a referendum was approved, merging it with the Kingdom of Sardegna, which became the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Note

The first stamp designs here show a fleur de lis, the symbol of the Bourbons. Their style look a little like a marble carving or something. I’m not sure I like them too much. I do like the simpler design that replace them in 1857, the ones on the last row here. The paper is nice and the colors of ink are very nice. Perhaps that’s why I bought the ones at the bottom first.
