Population Trends
The three stamps in the middle of this album page, on the third row are meant to emphasize the importance of the world’s population growth and associated problems. It was issued in relation to the World Population Conference that was held in Belgrade, Yugoslovia in 1965. The conference was held because of the historically unprecedented increase in population in some areas of the world.
The conference brought together many experts in this field. They discussed projecting population growth and the effects that will have on people and the environment. From 1950 to until 1965 when the conference was held, the world population went from two and half billion people, to three and a third billion. It’s now over eight billion. The U.N. saw the trajectory of the world population growth, but it seems it was unable to alter it. The best it could do was make the world aware and help it to adjust to the higher population.
Note
The blue stamp at the top and the reddish one below it are in commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the U.N. They’re the same stamps as the ones contained in the souvenir sheet on the previous page, except that these came from a normal sheet of stamps.
The bottom four stamps are defintives. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this album, I prefer smaller definitives for use with postcards and envelopes – something the U.N. Post Office refuses to issue. With that in mind, though, the size and shape of the one at the bottom isn’t too bad.
Contains 11 spots: own 11 – 11 unused, 0 used.
