Federico da Montefeltro
Federico da Montefeltro was born on June 7, 1422, at the Castello di Petroia, near Gubbio. His father, Guidantonio da Montefeltro, acknowledged him as an illegitimate son and had him legitimized, though there were persistent rumors that he was really Guidantonio’s grandson. In July 1444, after his half-brother Oddantonio was assassinated, Federico seized Urbino. His role in the plot is unclear, and at first he was only recognized as Count of Urbino. In 1474, Pope Sixtus IV gave him the ducal title, and he ruled as Duke of Urbino until he died in Ferrara on September 10, 1482. His son Guidobaldo succeeded him.
Basically, he made his living as a soldier for hire (a condottiero in Italian). He served as a mercenary captain for Milan, Florence and the Papal States, and he was known for his martial skill and for keeping the loyalty of his soldiers. He lost his right eye in a joust, and surgeons later removed the bridge of his nose and his eyelid, which is why his portrait by Piero della Francesca shows him in profile. In Urbino he built a humanist court in the Ducal Palace, designed by Luciano Laurana and Francesco di Giorgio Martini, and he commissioned a major library with a team of scribes. As a result, he is known as “the Light of Italy” and is seen as a major figure of the Italian Renaissance.
Note
The first stamp on this album page commemortes the artist Federico da Montefeltro. It’s a terrible drawing of him. I can’t imagine he would be pleased with it.
