Garibaldi & 50 Years
The hero of the wars that led to the unification of Italy was Giuseppe Garibaldi. In every city of substance in Italy, you’ll probably find a statue of him – maybe more than one, or a statue, a plaque, and a bust of him – as well as a street or other landmark named after him; perhaps a school even. In fact, there’s a statue of him in Washington Square in New York. He lived in NY for four years.
Garibaldi was the commander of the troops that started from Piemonte (i.e., Piedmont), sailed to Sicily and began conquering the many duchies, republics, city states and so forth until he had conquered all of them. When he was finished, he had created the nation of Italy and gave it to Vittorio Emanuele II for him to be its monarch.
The first four stamps on this album page show the image of Garibaldi. They were commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the forming of the kingdom. The stamps on the second and fourth row are also commemorating the anniversary. They show Roman mythical characters and scenes (e.g., Juturna, the goddess of water fountains). I guess they saw the establishment of the kingdom as part of the mythology of the Italian people.
Rebuilding a Church Tower
The stamps on the third row are of St. Mark’s church in Venice. On July 14, 1902, the tower of that church collapsed. For ten years, they painstakingly reconstructed the tower using the same stones to restore it to its original construction, but stronger. These stamps were sold to celebrate the completion of the project, and only in Veneto, the region of Venice.
To see a close-up of any of these stamps, click on the description of it in the table below. That will bring you to Colnect’s site where you can see a larger, clean image of the stamp.
Note
This page is complete. It’s the first page in this album on which I have all of the stamps and all are unused. Some of the pages before it are full, as in I have all of the stamps, but some are used. I hope to replace those used ones with unused ones. I hope to have several complete pages in row in this section, but some of those stamps are very expensive when unused. So it may take a while.
Contains 13 spots: own 13 – 13 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
