Tobacco Conference

Italian Republic, Page 62 (GR-4)

A European Tobacco Conference was held in Rome in 1950, and on September 11 of that year Italy issued three stamps to publicize it. Tobacco was not a new subject for stamps. Cuba had put a tobacco plantation on a stamp in 1928, and in 1930 the Italian postal service issued a stamp for Libya, for the Fourth Tripoli International Fair, that shows a tobacco plant.

The three values are 5 lire, 20 lire and 55 lire, and as you can see, the designs are all about the plant itself. The 5 lire stamp shows a tobacco plant and a factory, the 20 lire stamp shows a tobacco plant, and the 55 lire stamp shows a girl holding a tobacco plant. The designs are believed to include the Virginia Bright Italia, Kentucky Italia and Lecce Yoka varieties.

Note

I’ve not been able to find any information on the 1950 Tobacco Conference held in Rome. I’ve looked a few times on-line, but couldn’t find anything. I put one of the AI agents onto it and it pieced together only information about the stamps. I guess if I could read Italian well enough, I could research it at a library in Rome.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
