Education for Progress
The U.N. Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization, known as UNESCO, is an agency whose mandate is to promote international cooperation in education, arts, sciences and culture in the hopes for improving global security and peace as a result. The concepts of this agency began in 1922 as part of the League of Nations – with the agency’s precessar, International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation.
The stamps on the second row of this album show a person – maybe a teacher or maybe a child – writing with chalk on a board, symbolizing education. The caption says, Education for Progress. That’s very much the theme of UNESCO. I agree with them that many of the world’s problems – wars, conflicts, as well as illnesses – can be solved with education. Education is necessary for making progress in these areas.
Note
Confronting problems, facing difficult truths is very much part of finding solutions and making progress in the world and a core principle of the U.N. However, I don’t like stamps with uncomfortable images like the one of a mushroom cloud from a nuclear bomb exploding, or the two on the third row related to controling narcotics. I prefer more positive images.
