Postage Due
These stamps were used when mail was sent without enough postage. If someone handed in an envelop at the post office, of course, they wouldn’t accept it without the correct postage. However, if someone put an envelop in a public mail box, rather than return the envelop to the sender, the post office would put postage due stamps on the envelop for the deficient amount and deliver it, expecting the recipient to pay the cost of them. If they didn’t pay, only then would the envelop be returned to the sender.
This is the first album page I have from Leuchtturm for U.S. postage due stamps. The oldest one on this page are from 1930. The first postage due stamp from the U.S. Post Office was printed in 1879. I should have at least one page before this one. This page is labeled at the bottom right corner, PD-4. So there must be three pages that I’m missing. I bought these sets of pages over a year ago, but I’m only now noticing this problem. I need to write them to get the pages I need.
Note
This album page is about half full. I’m missing a few stamps and have a few used ones. Since I resumed collecting stamps about three years ago, and started focusing on U.S. stamps about a year ago, I have not yet spent much money and other resources on these stamps.
Contains 19 spots: own 13 – 9 unused, 4 used.
