Giordano

Italian Republic, Page 101 (GR-4)

Umberto Giordano was born on August 28, 1867 in the southern Italian region of Apulia. He studied at the Conservatoire of Naples under Paolo Serrao and went on to become a composer, mainly of operas.

His first opera, Marina, was written for a competition held by the music publisher Casa Sonzogno for the best one-act opera. Giordano was the youngest contestant and placed sixth out of seventy-three entries. Marina still caught enough attention that Sonzogno commissioned another opera from him. The result was Mala vita (i.e., Bad Life). It caused a scandal when it was performed in Rome in February 1892. Giordano’s next opera, Regina Diaz, was a failure, canceled after just two performances.

After that, Giordano moved to Milan and returned to verismo. The result was Andrea Chénier, which premiered at La Scala on March 28, 1896, and became his best-known work. Fedora followed in 1898 and featured the rising young tenor Enrico Caruso. Both operas are still performed today. He died in Milan on November 12, 1948 at the age of 81.

Note

On this album page, I particularly like the art work for the stamp in the middle of the third row, the one for the Resistence, Piave. It’s for the a battle during World War I along the Piave River in Italy in which the Italian troops stopped the advance of Austro-Hungarian and German troops from advanced deep into Italy. It’s an interesting story, but I mostly like the look of the stamp – although I don’t generally like photographs of people walking away.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
