Intl. Court of Justice
The pair of stamps on the third row with the sword image and scales are in commemoration of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). It was established in June 1945 by the U.N. Charter. It’s the successor of the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ), which was established in 1920 by the League of Nations.
The ICJ adjudicates disputes between countries, with its rulings and opinions serving as primary sources of international law. It has a panel of fifteen judges elected by the U.N. General Assembly and the U.N. Security Council for nine-year terms. No more than one judge of each nationality may be represented on court at the same time, and judges collectively must reflect the principal civilizations and legal systems of the world.
The ICJ is located in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. The building was built with funding from Andrew Carnegie, completed in 1913 – before the League of Nations was formed in 1920.
Note
The design of this period, the stamps on this page are very pleasing to me. I particularly like the design of the Namibia stamps, the first two on the third row. The matching colors, the font and spacing of the letters are all clean and pleasant. I also like the definitives on the second row. They have what was a modern design of their time – and may still look modern today. They have a fresh look with nice colors.
Contains 12 spots: own 12 – 12 unused, 0 used.
