Austro-Hungarian Empire

Occupations, Page AH-1 (GR-3)

From 1867 until 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was in control of several nations in central Europe. It was actually two consitutional monarchies under one person, who was the Emperor of Austria and the Apostolic King of Hungary. He was based in Vienna. From the great losses suffered in World War I and the aftermath, Hungary left the union in 1918, thus disolving the dual monarchy.

A few regions and smaller nations that were part of the empire were either previously part of Italy or a former Italian state, or they were home to many Italians and Italian-speaking people. In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, there was a movement of irredentism regarding this situation. Basically, many Italians saw these regions and nations as unredeemed parts of Italy. In a sense, this mind-set was the basis of the formation of the Kingdom of Italy: Giuseppe Garibaldi and his troops traveled the Italian peninsula and its islands and redeemed all of the duchies, republics, and city states in the name of Italia and the Savoy King of Sardegna. Mussolini, the Fascists, and the then King of Italy saw Trentino-Alto Adige (i.e., South Tyrol) and the small nations along the Adriatic Coast (e.g., Lubiana, Dalmatia) that once belonged to the Republic of Venice as regions that Garibaldi wasn’t able to redeem in the late 1800s, but should have taken during the unification wars.

Because of victories against the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I, Italy was able to grab these territories. They later forfeited some, though, during the peace treaty negotiations with the great powers of Europe – Croatia being the recipient of some – but other remained (i.e., Trentino). The stamps on this page and the following pages are from that period when these territories were occupied by Italian troops, until they were relinguished or integrated into Italy – at which time, they used regular Italian stamps without any overprinting for the regions.

Note

This album is new. I’ve only recently designed the pages and added information on the stamps to my database. I haven’t printed the album pages yet, nor have I mounted stamps on them. I’m on a kick lately to add all of the Italian albums I’m missing. Since I’m so close to having pages for everything, I’m pushing to finish before worrying about the stamps themselves.

The stamps on this page were used throughout Trentino, Venezia-Giulia, and Dalmatia. They were issued and used after the stamps on the following pages, with the exception of the ones for Dalmatia. I guess they decided it was too much trouble having stamps for each territory. They’re all overprinted with values in corona, the currency of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which is shared by all of these territories.
