Parcel Post

Occupations, Page AI-PP1 (GR-3)

Italian parcel post stamps came in pairs like these. When used, the left one would be glued to the package paperwork: it says at the bottom, Sul Bolletino, which basically meanings on the bill of lading. The part on the right was to be attached to the receipt given to the sender: Sul Ricevuto, which means on the receipt.

The image on the left ones seem to be of an old Greek sailing ship. I guess that goes with the concept of shipping a package. The stamps on the right side are of a rose. The word Rhodes in ancient Greek meant pomegranate, but later came to mean rose. I’ve seen this style of drawing a rose plant, somewhat thistle like on stove carvings of the crests associated with Rhodes. It may be both for the island and for a particular order of knights, as well.

Although these stamps were used on all of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes (i.e., Rodi in Italian) was the largest of the islands and the most populated. It was a significant focus of the Italian administration. So the name Rodi appears on the stamps. In part it was probably like how people tell outsiders they’re from the largest neighboring city, when they’re actually from a small suburb town.

Note

Unlike their Italian Kingdom counter parts at the time, these parcel post stamps have much brighter colors. I like these. I just need to get better at cutting the plastic mounts. They’re a little sloppily cut and pasted. As for layout, I think the all could be a little lower on the page. Maybe I could arrange the top set into four rows to make it more interesting.
