West New Guinea

U.N. New York, Page 62.3 (BL-1)

After several years of disputing who should have authority of West New Guinea, under U.N. Temporary Executive Authority, the United Nations took over the administration of West New Guinea on October 1, 1962. This was the first time the U.N. had done this. They would do this in other parts of the world four more times.

For peacekeeping, Pakistan contributed about fifteen hundred troops, with Canada and the United States contributing a few each. The U.N. oversaw the removal of Dutch officials from government and the courts, replacing them with local Indonesians. The U.N. adminstration lasted until May 1, 1963 when the territory became part of Indonesia, in keeping with a plebiscite.

Note

These stamps were a little difficult to find, but they’re not very expensive stamps. Recently, I bought them from a dealer in Australia. Unfortunately, he has me on his mailing list. I get advertisements from him at least once a month – although I’ve click unsubscribe a few times.

Contains 8 spots: own 8 – 8 unused, 0 used.
