Maia

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-71 (BL-2)

The stamp at the bottom shows a pastel on canvas picture drawn in 1938 by Pablo Picasso of his daughter, María de la Concepción Picasso – also known as Maya or Maia. It’s entitled, First Snow because it’s from when she took her first steps in snow, which is why she’s looking down at her feet.

I don’t like most of Picasso’s art – especially some of his cubism paintings – but I like this one. I’m not sure why its on a U.N. stamp, though. It’s not part of the U.N. art collection. It’s in the Picasso Museum in Paris, a part of their permanent collection. It is, however, to commemorate the U.N. International School. So maybe it’s meant to show children going to school in the snow.

Note

The U.N. Post Office issued stamps in New York with these same designs (see U.N. Intl. School), including two of the Maya stamps – for two face amounts. On that page I write about the school.

Contains 7 spots: own 7 – 7 unused, 0 used.
