Jacopo da Ponte

Italian Republic, Page 92.2 (GR-5)

Jacopo da Ponte was born around 1510 in Bassano del Grappa, a town about 65 km from Venice. He took the name of the town as his surname, so he is usually known as Jacopo Bassano. His father, Francesco the Elder, was a locally successful painter who ran a family workshop, mostly making religious works. Jacopo trained there and also learned surveying, mapmaking and engineering, which may explain his detailed paintings of the countryside around Venice. In the 1530s he worked in Venice, where he may have studied under Bonifazio Veronese, and he picked up an appreciation of Titian that shaped his early style. After his father died in 1539, he returned to Bassano del Grappa for good and took over the workshop.

He painted religious works, landscapes and scenes of everyday life, and he often placed biblical subjects in rural settings with peasants and animals. From the late 1550s, pastoral scenes (e.g., shepherds, animals and farm labor) became central to his work. In his last decades he was one of the first artists to paint nocturnes – night scenes lit by artificial light – which were very popular. He died in Bassano del Grappa on February 14, 1592. Four of his sons became painters and kept working in his style, and the workshop went on producing paintings in his manner after his death. Hence historians have a hard time telling which works are really his.

Note

The large stamp in the middle of the second row on this album page is a painting by Jacopo Bassano, the same painter. It’s called the Adorazione dei pastori (Adoration of the Shepherds).
