Americana
In general, I don’t particularly like the design of these stamps. However, they did serve well as definitives – stamps that aren’t commemoratives and are dull standard stamps. What I find interesting about them is that they used colored, aged looking paper. I don’t particularly like that, but it’s unusual for U.S. stamps.
Each stamp has a phrase curved around two edges. Some of them are quotes from famous leaders of the time of the U.S. revolution. For example, from Thomas Jefferson there’s the line, “Liberty depends on freedom of the press.” There’s an excerpt from Longfellow’s Paul Revere’s Ride: “Midnight Ride - One if by land, two if by sea.” And some don’t seem to be a famous quote, but a comment about the topic of the stamp.
They seems a little random or disorganized, but there are groupings of sub-themes for this Americana series, four stamps for each topic: roots of democracy, rights and freedoms, symbols of America, pioneer America, and America’s light. That’s not necesarily very complete, but I guess they were good at making citizens during the bicentennial aware of core elements of the founding of the country.
Note
As I was moving these stamps from my old stockbooks to this album page, I was surprised to discover that I’ve had all of them. I seem to remember buying them from the post office, not from a stamp dealer. It’s difficult to get all of the stamps offered by the post office when at a local branch. They don’t always have everything available and don’t have the patience to show you all they have in their drawer for sale. They usually have a line of people waiting.
At that time, though, the post office had started selling stamps by mail. They would mail me a catalog of all of the stamps available, as well as upcoming issues. I remember going through the catalog and filling out an order form for the stamps I wanted. I must have ordered one of each. I’m glad I did now.
Contains 20 spots: own 20 – 20 unused, 0 used.
