Grand Duchy of Toscana
The Second Italian War of Independence started in the summer of 1859. Giuseppe Garibaldi and his troops conquered Tuscany fairly quickly. The then grand duke, Leopold II left and eventually abdicated his throne to his son, Ferdinand IV. He was deposed, though, by the Tuscan National Assembly on 16 August 1859.
In December 1859, the Grand Duchy were merged with the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza to form the United Provinces of Central Italy. That was later absorbed into the Kingdom of Sardegna, and subsequently the new Kingdom of Italy.
Note
These stamps are so neat looking. I like the design of the seated lion, and I like the colors. I also like that you can see still today statues exactly like this lion, at the entrance to churches and key buildings in Florence and other major cities in Tuscany.
Contains 23 spots: own 4 – 3 unused, 1 used.
