Intel. Property Org.
In the late 1800s a series of conventions were held with just a few countries of Europe and a couple in South America to agree on the protecting patents, artistic and literary copyrights, as well as trademarks. It was the first time protection could be obtained in other countries without having to seek protection from each country individually. As a result of these agreements, a combined international bureau was established in 1893 in Switzerland for registering these patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The bureau would continue until 1970 when it was replaced by a new agency with a broader mandate.
The World Intellectual Property Organization was formed to include all intellectual properties, not just the types defined by the previous treaties – it covered more than just machines and books. The previous treaties and burea were merged into it, along with its members. The new organization protected all intellectual property rights, as well as the promotion of technology and related economic development. In 1974, it became a specialized agency of the United Nations, bringing more members to the WIPO: there are now one-hundred ninety-three countries.
The WIPO headquarters is in Geneva at the U.N. complex. The top two stamps on this page show the building where they’re located.
Note
As I’ve researched many of this organizations, conventions, and programs at the United Nations, I’ve been amazed at how much they do, how much they try to accoomplish. It’s embarrassing that the U.S. government often withholds its part of the annual funding. In 1998, because the U.S. wasn’t contributing their fair share, the billionaire Ted Turner – founder of the news service, C.N.N. – formed the U.N. Foundation to donate a billion dollars to U.N. programs.
